WHAT DOES AGAPE MEAN?
Pronounced (ä-gə-pā) a-gah-pay
The Ancient Greeks had FOUR words for LOVE.
1. Philia (φιλία philía) is love between friends
2. Storge (στοργή storgē) means "affection" like that felt by parents for their children.
3. Éros (έρως érōs) is intimate, passionate love (not necessarily sexual, but definitely more than philia, friendship love) where our word erotic comes from….
4. Agape, is the fourth and final definition, and it means unconditional selfless, self-giving, sacrificial love.
Agape love is a little different. It is not a feeling; it's a motivation for action that we are free to choose or reject. Agapeis a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort, and even death for the benefit of another without expecting anything in return. We are called to agape love through Christ's example: "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:1-2).
